Fairfield Cup 2006 - Sail fast, kick ass, and take names

Saturday morning I had to wake up early in the morning. Trevor called me at 6:15 AM and woke me up (as planned), then i called Andrew and woke him up, but he was already awake.
I somehow managed to drag myself out of bed, then I went to the Westport House of Pancakes (WHOP) which used to be IHOP, but they changed it. I had a fajita omelette and buttermilk pancakes. I ate half of both then i was like damn, i ate a lot and now I'm full. In the middle of that somewhere, my friend catharina showed up.
I called my dad and told him to come and drive us to Pequot Yacht Club, where the Fairfield Cup is held every year. None of us really knew the way, so we managed to get lost on the way.
We got to Pequot and we helped out the laser people rigging their boats. There were four different fleets in the cup, the Laser Standard Rig, Laser Radial, 420 A Fleet, and 420 B fleet. I sailed in the 420 A Fleet with James. Anyway, we helped the laser people rig their boats, then we riged our own boats. We had to take the mast off one of our boats, I dont remember why. They had food there but I didnt eat any because i was so full from my breakfast. I went to get changed and then we had the skippers meeting, where they basically informed us about what was going on that day and how sunny it was going to be (yea, about that sun...)
We got on the water, James and I were sailing boat 4 of the CPYC boats, but they count that as boat #80 because that was the sail number. We sailed out of Pequot harbor which went fast, usually it takes forever. Over the past times I've sailed at Peqot i have discovered that there is rarely any wind there at all. There was more wind than usual, but still not that much.
We got out there and sailed around for a while, we waited for the commitee to set up the course, then the laser standards started out, then the radials, and then it was our turn. We started out with an amazing start, DOMINATION. We found that the middle was favoured because half the boats went to the boat, and the other half to the pin. We sticked with the middle because then we could tack late on and round the mark first. We rounded the mark, being in 2nd place, then downwind we got some sick speed and got way ahead of other people. Then we rounded the last mark, still far ahead from everyone else and right behind two girls from joel barlow that are really good.
The 2nd race went the same way as the first one, but people were not as far behind as us. We got 2nd place, then we had to switch with Andrew and Catharina, because they were sailing the B fleet. It didnt go their way. Their starts weren't as good. Anyway, they did two races. Inbetween julia managed to get first place which was amazing. We were all jumping and cheering for her because we were really happy. We also discovered that the current was really fast and that it looked like we were moving even though we were standing still.
After they finished their two races it was the A fleets turn. James and I got in to boat 6. We Started our race and our start sort of sucked. We hit the pin and we had to do a 360 so we fell far behind. We managed to catch up with the fleet and take 6th place. When we had rounded the 3rd mark we couldn't see the finishing line because it was so foggy. When we finished our race we went to our committee boat and sat there for a while to see if the fog would go away, but we waited and waited then they told us that we were towing the boats in and ending the regatta. We got the boats in and derigged them, then it all cleared up and the sun came out. When we were done derigging I went to get changed and then it was the awards cermony. We were convinced that we would get 3rd place but to a surprize we got 2nd place with 10 points. The 1st place people got 9 points, while the 3rd place people got 12 points. Julia got 2nd place in laser radial which was amazing. Staples High School got 3rd place overall which was also amazing. I only have one thing to say: STAPLES SAILING RULES!!!
